BUILD YOUR OWN WOODFIRED PIZZA & BREAD COB OVEN

1 DAY COURSE

“Your oven is so beautiful – will you please teach us how to build one?”

Completed cob oven at smallholder training courses at South Yeo Farm West, Devon

Why come on this course?

Join us for a day and learn how to build a permanent woodfired pizza and bread oven using natural materials. A cob oven is a beautiful structure that you can use again and again for baking and roasting a huge variety of foods including authentic crispy pizza, delicious bread and succulent roasts such as duck and lamb. At the end of the day you will have the confidence to build an oven using material from your own land. The course is also a useful introduction for anyone who has cob buildings in need of repair or restoration. No previous experience is required and you don’t have to be built like a navvy!

“It really was a fab day and I’m all fired up (excuse the pun!) to build my own cob oven now! I couldn’t have asked for better new found friends to learn with!” Sarah SP, Devon
“I would just like to reiterate how much I enjoyed today. The warmth of the welcome of you and Andrew made for a super pleasant as well as informative day. Fantastic food, great fellow students… it was perfect – I wouldn’t hesitate to book with you again for other courses.”
LK, Exeter

COURSE CONTENT

This is primarily a hands-on course during which you will experience all the stages of building an oven, from sourcing the materials, shaping the former, building the cob dome and applying an earth render. We will also cover the theory on the basics of making cob, finding suitable soils, and techniques for mixing. You will have the opportunity to fire our existing oven in which our lunch will be cooked.

The course is run on our beautiful Devon farm which has an abundance of old cob buildings in varying states of repair and the techniques you will learn can be applied to the repair or restoration of any cob structure.

This course runs from 10am to 4.45pm.  Do bring clothing that you don’t mind getting VERY muddy, clean wellies or stout boots, waterproofs and a change of clothes to go home in.  Please note that cob ovens are static structures, so you won’t be taking one home with you at the end of the day, but you will know how to build one when you get there (and have a detailed handout with stage by stage photos for reference).

Just a quick note to say thank you very much for providing an outstanding day in all departments. I think the day was also helped by the fact that as a bunch of strangers, we all got on so well with each other…many thanks for a wonderful day full of joy, wit and great company. David K, Swindon
